The Thrill of Discovery

Obi-Wan Kenobi nodded at the long-winded commander even as his blue-gray eyes slowly scoured the camp. He tugged at his short, reddish beard thoughtfully. He’d had an odd feeling all morning. As if there was something he was missing. There was a strange undercurrent of the Force that he couldn’t quite comprehend.

His eyes locked on a figure on the far side of the camp and he frowned, uncertain at first as to what he was seeing. “Uh…excuse me, Commander. There is something I must see to.”

He walked swiftly across the camp, dodging equipment and supplies, to arrive silently in front of Anakin’s young Padawan, Ahsoka. The Togruta girl had one small hand clasped over her eyes but the other was outstretched in front of her as she marched along. She was mumbling under her breath and Obi-Wan could not quite catch the words.

Her outstretched hand came into contact with Obi-Wan’s midriff and she gave a surprised screech. She snatched her hand off her eyes and jumped back. “Master Obi-Wan!”

He smiled despite the oddness of the situation. “Good morning, Padawan Ahsoka. May I inquire as to…what unique manner of training exercise you are attempting?”

Her blue eyes seem to grow even larger as her lekku twitched, and she looked at him, perplexed. “Training? I don’t understand, Master Obi-Wan.”

Obi-Wan simply smiled and mimicked Ahsoka’s recent activity, putting one hand over his eyes and holding the other arm outstretched. He peeked through his fingers at her.

He had expected her to smile at his imitation but she did not. Instead she stared at him with a strange look on her face and then quickly looked back over her shoulder at a group of tents in the far corner of the campsite. “Oh…uh…training. Actually, it was more of…an experiment. Yes. I was doing an experiment.” She smiled, showing her sharp little teeth.

“I see. And what would be the nature of this…experiment…and does your master know of it? And speaking of Anakin, I haven’t seen him this morning. Where’s he gotten off to?”

Her mind whirled at all of his questions before grasping the ones most worrisome. “Oh…uh…no, he doesn’t know of it…but…but…” She looked back over her shoulder again. “I think he may be…uhmm…talking to Captain Rex. I’m sure he’ll be along shortly.”

Obi-Wan squinted at her as she shifted nervously from one foot to the other, hands clasped behind her back. Sometimes the child was an enigma. But despite being a budding Jedi she was still a child and children sometimes had odd reasoning and did odd things. He had certainly learned that quickly from having Anakin as a Padawan.

“Very well. But when you see him, please inform him that we are expected to attend the meeting with Senator Amidala.” He looked around carefully, there was that odd feeling back…

“Oh. Yes. Senator Amidala.”

Ahsoka’s voice sounded strange as she spoke of the young Senator and Obi-Wan decided a mild warning was in order. “Need I remind you that Senator Amidala is a very important person, Ahsoka. We would not want to offend her by being late.”

“She’s nice.”

Obi-Wan smiled at the simplicity of the young Jedi’s comment. “Yes, she is a nice lady too. For a politician. I’m looking forward to hearing her speak to the others.” His eyes twinkled and he smiled again, patted her shoulder, and turned to make his way back across the camp to enter the small structure that had been set up for their communications systems.

She stared after him for long moments after he’d entered the small building, astonished that he hadn’t sensed…that he didn’t know…that the unexpected and unsettling knowledge hadn’t appeared written on her forehead for him to read as easily as a flimsiplast.

She turned slowly to look back again at the tents, in particular the larger one to the back with the blue design on the flap. She chewed on her lip thoughtfully. It was really none of her concern. It wasn’t her business.

…bare legs and arms intertwining…the Senator’s dark hair spreading across the pallet…her master…

She moaned and clasped her hand over her eyes again. If only she hadn’t seen! Why had she gone looking for Anakin? Why couldn’t she have been patient just this once?

A thought occurred to her suddenly and she jerked her hand off her eyes and whirled around to stare at the rest of the camp. Did they know? Did Obi-Wan? Or…or…was it a secret? She frowned, uncertain.

Attachment was discouraged among the Jedi. But she wasn’t so naïve as to think all of the Jedi were…what was the word? Her rattled mind finally found it and latched onto it. Celibate. Jedi weren’t required to be celibate though the subject wasn’t something that was talked about much.

But…Senator Amidala? That seemed risky. Dangerous even. And she didn’t exactly know a lot about politics but she didn’t think an…uhh…intimate…friendship between a Senator and a Jedi would be met with approval. And the more she thought of it, the more she was certain Obi-Wan did not know about it. He would most definitely be disapproving.

Slowly she eased her way back closer to the tent. Surely they must be…finished…by now. Her sensitive hearing picked up…uh…well maybe they weren’t

She skittered away to the side and stood behind a slender gray tree. What should she do? Surely her master did not realize how much time had passed and he would be missed. She shook her hands nervously and one of them bumped the small comlink attached to her belt. Her face brightened. She could call him. That way she could warn him but he wouldn’t know she was warning him.

Her slender finger quickly punched in his code. “Master? Master Anakin, where are you?”

She heard a burst of static, then nothing. Surely he would answer. Drat it. They were probably rolling all over the comlink and…

“Master! You answered!”

“What is it, Ahsoka? Is there a problem?” Was he out of breath? He sounded out of breath.

“Oh, no…no Master…no, no problem at all,” she chirped happily.

“Then why are you calling, Ahsoka?”

“Oh…oh…I was…supposed to remind you of the meeting. The meeting you’re to go to with Obi-Wan. And Senator Amidala. Soon.”

There was silence for a moment, she heard vague murmuring. She leaned around the tree to look at the tent. Suddenly, Anakin scrambled out of it, attaching his lightsaber to his belt with one hand and the comlink grasped in the other. She grinned. My, but he could get dressed quickly.

She looked at her comlink. “Yes, Master?”

“Would you…would you tell Obi-Wan that I’ve…had a slight delay but will be along shortly?”

“Of course, Master. But he said it wouldn’t be good to be late. Because of Senator Amidala.” She listened to the silence before adding considerately, “It might offend her if you’re late.”

“I won’t be late, Ahsoka. As a matter of fact, I’m sure I’ll be there even before the Senator arrives.”

“If you say so, Master.”

Clicking the comlink off, she peeked around the tree to see Anakin leaning inside the doorway of the tent. Grinning, she ran quickly back across the camp to deliver her master’s message to Master Obi-Wan.

Cross-posted to anakinxahsoka, this should be.
This was so cute! I could really see and hear Ahsoka and understand her logic, good for you. Obi-Wan's Ani-sense must have been clouded that afternoon.

I liked this. So Ahsoka saves the day again. I can only imagine the big explosion if Obi-Wan had been the one searching for Anakin instead.:o

Yes, I think Ahsoka would do anything for her master, including covering up his entanglement with Padme.:)

Hahaha! My, but Anakin and Padme must have missed each other desperately to be rolling around in a tent with Obi-Wan, the clones, and Ahsoka on the loose.:]

Well, they don't see each other that often so I guess they just couldn't wait until a safer time.:)
