Not Today

Get up

The voice, his own voice, mocking and cruel, rang painfully through his head but he pushed it away. No, I won’t. Not this time. I’ll just lie here until it’s all over with. When the station blows I’ll be gone in the blink of an eye.

Vader lay still on the hard steel floor. Waiting. His nerves screamed with pain, begged him to do something. Some of his bones were broken, ribs, maybe something in his back. If he cared more he would go into a light meditation to lesson the pain and start the healing process.

And the helmet, the horrible bell-shaped death’s head of a helmet, it really had not meant to be worn while lying flat on the floor, and his neck muscles were clamoring as loudly as the rest now. It was taking a great deal of concentration to keep himself still. Waiting.

He felt dizzy now and closed his eyes tightly. He wondered if the room was really spinning. Surely it couldn’t be much longer now. The Rebels had enough firepower to blow a moon-sized crater where the station was. What was taking them so long this time?

The Rebels. Something tickled at his mind. He’d forgotten something. Something important, even…urgent. Gradually a fuzzy memory swam into his brain. A boy. No, not really. A young man, glowing so brightly with the Force that it had been hard for Vader to look directly at him. His son.

His son, Luke. A piece of Anakin and her, living and breathing and wielding the Force like the Jedi of old. Vader’s breath rattled in his throat. And the Emperor dearly wanted him. Anakin’s son. Vader’s son. Vader’s mind swam with the visions of what might be.

Slowly, body screaming in agony, Vader pushed himself up on his hands and knees. So. His death was not to be today. Vader rose to his feet, stood shakily for a moment, and then straightened his back. For a moment the pain went white-hot and he struggled for a time to master it. Then he stepped around the rest of the dead and made his way out into the smoke-filled battle.

The fight was not over but it soon would be. He’d make sure of that.
He heard the Rebels shout as they saw him, he casually and effortlessly defected their blaster bolts and stalked past them. He would not die. Not today. He had things to do and a Jedi to catch.

When I read this fic, I see a complete merging of the prequel-Anakin and Original Trilogy Darth Vader. I really liked this.
